My sculpture critique last week generated a good discussion about eating, instagram and experience. This piece was driven by an assignment in casting class: Presence and Absence. The idea was to represent the space around a meal and the absence of pastimes: the ritual of eating in the Emily Post era - setting the table and communing around it with family and friends, or perhaps just ourselves. Those set of procedures initiate an experience that may have gotten lost in modern times. What is present in the absence of past rituals is the i-phone, displaying an instagram feed of #dinner. There was some conflict about putting the phone into the piece but after spending time with it more and more people thought it was relevant. The commentary on the presence of social media in our mealtimes and the way it forms our experience was well noted by everyone.
